Clients are not always able to articulate exactly what they want, but they often have a dream: bold color or softly shaded paths, orderly rows of boxwoods or a rampant mix of perennials and grasses. Once ideas have been discussed, I work with the two underlying concepts of any design: mass and void. Or put another way, areas of dense planting and open spaces where the eye can rest, placing these two concepts in pleasing juxtaposition. From there, the selection of plant materials can commence.

We end with an outdoor room that speaks to the heart, whether achieved with a riot of roses or a festival of fragrance. From a paper plan comes a day when paths have been laid, benches have been placed, and buds are opening. Add birds, butterflies, and a tray for morning tea and together, we have made a garden.
